Pumping in Public....

Carb-counting in a Crowd...

Monitoring with the Masses...

Lunch to a Bunch...

Call it what you want, this blog is my attempt to take my diabetes -- and my self-care -- public.

Technically speaking, I have everything I need to my diabetes. I have health insurance, a decent blood glucose monitor, an insulin pump, and a decent head on my shoulders. Yet this morning at a long overdue checkup with my endocrinologists, I got the upsetting news that some of my test results show possible early warning signs of kidney damage. My A1C has been above 9 for six years or more. I know I don't eat in the most nourishing way possible, I forget to take my insulin doses at meals, and I basically live in denial that I have a chronic illness.

If I invited you here, you're somebody I want on my team to help support me in keeping my eyes, legs, kidneys, and all that's good and holy functioning for at least another five decades or so--and beyond that, taking care of myself in a way that keeps me energized and fit for the work I'm on this earth to do!

Making changes in my care requires data, so that's what you'll see a lot of here. My blackberry goes everywhere with me; my diabetes logbook does not, so I'll be leaving a trail for myself and anyone else who's looking in via e-mail posts to help understand what's behind the numbers. I'll also be sharing what I'm learning along the way -- from tips and tricks and recipes to coaching and advice I receive.

Hope you enjoy!
